Thinking Texas Teachers Threatened

No, Texas’s science teachers are not being physically threatened, but their ability to properly teach science is in serious danger this week. From January 21st to 23rd, the Texas Board of Education is holding public hearings and then voting on whether or not creationism (in the guise of “Intelligent Design”) should be taught in their schools.

If you live in Texas or know anyone who does, please contact your representative and if possible attend the remaining meetings in support of sane education policies, because it sounds like the vote is going to be close. If the creationists win here and the decision is not overturned at the BoE’s meeting in March, the policy will be in place for 10 years, or until a court is forced to step in.

Texans can find information on how to get involved at the Teach Them Science site, and through the Texas Freedom Network. Others who just want to learn more about what’s going on, check out the post on Bad Astronomy. There is a pretty good discussion in the comments section, but here’s my contribution to the thread in case you don’t go there:

I understand the need for you to raise alarm and to ridicule; you have nothing to back up you position. Here’s a thought, what if God did create the universe…of strongly influenced the creation of it? Is that remotely possible? Your position is based on the initial premise that you are certain this is not true.

How could you know such a thing with absolute certainty? I suppose you also think believers arrogant?

We have nothing to back up *our* position? Claiming that it is “remotely possible” that your god created the universe isn’t much backing.

Evolution has 150 years of testing and hard evidence in many different scientific fields. Creationism has…the Bible. There is a reason that movies like Expelled just attack evolution and scientists without presenting any real case for creationism, and that is because the only things that creationists have to back up their claims are easily disproven nonsense from such great minds as Kent Hovind and Ken Ham.

Answers in Genesis and the Institute for Creation Research do not do good science. The vast majority of their claims have already been torn to shreds by people who actually know what they’re talking about, but they continue to spew out the same nonsense that they must already know is wrong.

Even worse are people like Ray Comfort with his “atheist’s nightmare” banana. We already know that bananas as we see them today have been very heavily influenced by artificial human selection. Bananas, like many of the plants we use for food, are very different from their wild ancestors, and the aspects of these plants which we find desirable are generally magnified by human intervention. In the unlikely event that there are creator gods out there, they did not make bananas the way they are today.

We could go on all day about these subjects. What exactly do you have to back up creationism? I have yet to see a shred of real evidence for any god, let alone anything to make me believe in a literal interpretation of the creation of the world as laid out in the Bible.

When you have as much evidence for creation as we have for evolution, then I will consider this a real debate. Until then, “creation scientists” had better get to work on coming up with their first piece of evidence.

We don’t need to have “absolute certainty” that something is wrong before teaching it to children. We don’t know with absolute certainty that there are not Martians living under the ground of the red planet just waiting and building an army to conquer the Earth, but we have no evidence to suggest that this is happening, so we do not teach it in science classes.

Please, Texas, don’t use the board of education to beat your children. We are already falling woefully behind the rest of the world in education, particularly in science, and pretending that believing in the Biblical creation story and twisting or ignoring science in an attempt to justify your beliefs is just as good as accepting the facts is only going to hurt us more.

No More Years!

Moments ago, Barack Obama was sworn in as the 44th President of the United States of America. Many of you love him, many others hate him, and some of you are probably ambivalent like me. Whatever you think of him though, at least we can finally send Bush back to clearing brush on his ranch and we can only hope that he won’t find a way to do any further damage in the world.

Having passed the first hurdle, with Obama not coming out in his speech as a Muslim intent on instituting Sharia law or destroying the US, I think that even the conspiracy theorists can start to calm down, at least a little. The fact is, he is a man like any other. A politician, yes, but not a demon, and he probably is what he appears to be. He will not fix all of the problems of the world, but he won’t bring about the end of the world either.

Fortunately, I don’t think that most people believe the worst about him, but I do still see too much distrust and fear of Obama and the election process. I was a little disturbed this morning when I heard a couple of people, people who had voted for Bush in both of his highly questionable elections, saying that this election was flawed or rigged.

Perhaps they couldn’t believe that a black man could be elected in this country? Maybe they finally see the danger in the haphazard and untraceable election systems we have scattered throughout the country? I’m afraid that is probably not the case, and it was just a couple of bitter old Republicans angry at their party’s loss of power. If we’re lucky though, thoughts like these (however unfounded they may be) will motivate more people to ensure that future elections are fair and trustworthy.

Either way, the election is over. Obama is our new president, and from what I’ve seen he won fairly in the least questionable election we’ve had since 2000. He’s not perfect, but he’s not the anti-Christ and he’s not likely to destroy the country. Even if he tried he would have a hard time doing worse than Bush did, so don’t you think we should at least give him a chance?

I don’t expect Obama to work miracles, and I’m sure that many people will be disappointed when they see that he can’t, but despite my inherent distrust of politicians, I am optimistic. We have a chance to turn things around and get back on the track to freedom, prosperity and peace, all three of which were trampled under the boots of Bush’s minions for the last 8 years. I hope that Obama really is dedicated to the goals of undoing as much of the harm that Bush caused as possible and moving forward to make the United States and the world a better place.

Good luck, President Obama.

The Inauguration of the Anti-Christ

If you’ve been paying any attention, you should know by now that Barack Hussein Obama has only been pretending to be a good Christian, but really he’s a secret Muslim and a terrorist. Tomorrow this great country of ours will swear in Barack Hussein Obama as President of the United States and Terrorist in Chief, and one day you will all regret it.

One day, when the whole world is ruled by Barack Hussein Obama and his world government, you will regret it. One day, when all of mankind is marked with the mark of the beast, you will know you did wrong. One day, when the Anti-Christ’s forces are defeated by the armies of God and the Jezreel Valley below Megiddo drowns in rivers of blood in the battle of Armageddon, you will know you did wrong in the eyes of the Lord and He will not have pity on you unbelievers unless you repent now and accept his perfect sacrifice for your sins so you can be on His side in the battle and reign with him in his coming kingdom of glory! Hallelujah!

I know lots of you kids on this web page want this evil man to be your President, but you all don’t have the True Christian Radar I have for seeing just who is a good follower of Christ and who isn’t. I bet Barack Hussein Obama won’t even support Israel’s holy invasion of Gaza because it’s his people against God’s people!

That’s about all I’ve got to say about that now. You picked him, you live with him. Until a righteous army of God comes to sweep me up along with God’s other faithful servants to march on Washington and overthrow the false godless administration of Barack Hussein Obama, I will be talking to you from inside the Tribulation Bunker.

To all of you Christians who have not yet fled the country or built your own bunkers, may God have mercy on you. I expect that within days you will be rounded and herded into concentration camps where you will have to wait for our holy armies to free you, if you aren’t killed right away that is. We will come for you as soon as we can though, so keep the faith. Trust in God and He will deliver you out of harm or into Heaven. God bless you all, my Christian brothers.

Your friend in Christ,

Mill Avenue Resistance Reports: Saturday, January 17th 2009

The Mill Avenue Resistance reports are written by Kyt Dotson as an extension of anthropological research on the population of Mill Avenue in Tempe, Arizona. Since the Resistance does their protests Friday and Saturday there are two reports a week. The supporting material not related to the Resistance reports can be found on the Under the Hills blog for Saturday, January 17th 2009 (when it goes up.)

When the Resistance arrived there were a few preachers set up at the P.O including Al, the Way of the Master preachers, and Shawn3. With him Shawn3 had brought a large black sign with big print white letters proclaiming “Evolution is a lie.” He quickly ditched that location and went down to Urban Outfitters. Leaving Al and that crew behind at the PO. The Resistance largely ignored them for Shawn3’s crew.

Shawn3 at Urban Outfitters had a larger group with him made up of two new preachers, and three small children aged from possibly seven years old to ten, and also William the late gradeschooler was also there with a high end amateur DSLR camera. New people in Shawn3’s group I’m told were brothers of his. The first guy had short brown hair, a scruffy badly kempt beard, blue and yellow single-stripe shirt like a sports outfit. His mirror speech consisted of ignoring all comers, and pretty much only circled around to shouting, “Put your faith in Christ,” and nothing new or original. The other had long brown hair, a visible moustache with a much better cultivated chin and lip beard.

Urban Outfitters started the night with their doors wide open, taking in public visitors to and fro—but shortly after 9pm when Shawn3’s group started preaching, they closed them without a word. Shawn3 has become well known for abusively loud preaching on his megaphone at decibels that exceed anything respectful of the street itself and not only is his megaphone extremely loud, he shouts into it with the full brassado of his vocal ability.

At one point close to 9:20pm the Resistance lent their speaker to a Christian passerby who didn’t like what he was hearing, he quickly took to the amplification to tell one of Shawn3’s brothers that he was committing a sin of pride. Another Christian, Vince, also took up the speaker for more than half the night in attempts to talk to Shawn3‘s crowd who roundly ignored him, rebuffing him and everyone else with their repugnantly overloud preaching.

At around 9:45 Shawn3 and his insanely loud megaphone use went back to work again. Damaging people’s hearing and generally abusing the public trust with the decibels of his preaching and spent about four minutes shouting over seven times: “Read your Bible!” All in a row.

Over at the Post Office I met a young black man named Dre who is one of Vocab’s friends and apparently part of that crew—I don’t know if he raps also, I should have asked, it seems like most of them are good at it. He says that he came to Christianity about two and a half years ago and only very recently started coming out to Mill Ave. He wore thick rimmed spectacles and a cap, held a polite voice and vaguely South Western diction. A bit of obvious mirror speech, but unlike others he didn’t regard my questions as disruptions and actually held a discussion with me; amid he mostly just encouraged me to not let the Bible “be just another book in my repertoire.” But admitted that while he normally doesn’t like to appeal to emotion that sometimes he is concerned about other people going to Hell. Probably a good position for him to have because most other cultures who are not Christian see the use of the mention of Hell as a coercion by threat and find it extremely insulting and disrespectful.

Omar arrived on the Ave around 9:30pm or earlier before I returned to Urban Outfitters and potential cochlear damage from Shawn3’s abusively loud preaching. He had with him his new sign reading, “GODLESS 4 GOODNESS” stenciled in white on black.

At about 10pm, Shawn3 and his crew start to break apart, flip around their sign, and simply fold into themselves. During the entire time that they were set up Papa Soul didn’t play a single chord; he set up sometime between 8 and 9pm and stayed pretty much to himself until the preachers cut down and left.

Al remained at the PO with the other Way of the Master preachers and were pretty much ignored by the Resistance for the entire night.

All the way until midnight the Resistance kept shop in front of Urban Outfitters. There was no use of amplification except earlier by the preachers. After they left an actual worthwhile-for-existence sound level settled and a lot of small contestations were to be had. I spent some time speaking with John and a blonde woman with spectacles whose name now escapes me.

Kazz and Omar remained as the only components of the protest venue and both spoke with individual people. Kazz with Emilio and Omar with two individuals I did not recognize.

The night dwindled from there.

Bad Claims: Population Supports Global Flood

In their attempts to prove the Bible true and to disprove evolution, I have heard creationists make many bad claims, but one of my creationist friends has recently taken to using three specific claims which he seems to think are unassailable. Yesterday we took one apart (the recession of the moon). Today the next comes down, and it comes down in a much worse way for creationists.

The claim is that if we trace the population of the world back, assuming that the population grows at a specific rate which they make up to fit with the story they are trying to prove, then at the time they believe the Biblical flood happened there would have been 8 people just like the Bible says. This idea is completely unsupportable.

Not only does the population of the world today not in any way prove that a global flood happened 4,400 years ago leaving only 8 people, 7 of each “clean animal” and 2 of each “unclean animal” alive, the population of the world shortly after this time proves that it could not have happened. Once again, creationists hang themselves by attempting to use science.

The video does not cover everything that’s wrong with this ludicrous claim, but it should do more than enough to put it to rest in most people’s minds.

Bad Claims: The Recession of the Moon

Of course, some presentations of this are worse than others. In this one Thunderf00t lambastes a particularly bad example of the claim/argument, but he does cover rather tidily the issues involved.

And here’s one where Desertphile does an excellent job of explaining why the extrapolation based on no evidence is outright intellectually dishonest; he also goes into some of the evidence that makes the extrapolation obviously incorrect.

This bad argument has been floating around for some time. It’s a gross misunderstanding of astronomy promulgated by Answers in Genesis to the credulous and those with little scholarship in any of the sciences needed to comprehend it. The biggest problem with this argument—and it’s not really an argument; it’s more like an unsupported claim—is that it rests on a faulty premise: The moon has been receding from the Earth at the same rate since it’s inception.

Really? Do you have evidence that it has been receding at the same rate ever since whatever event generated our moon? The answer isn’t just a resounding, “No,” it’s a resounding, “There is evidence that the moon had been receding by much less in the past than it is today.”

There are a number of poorly framed arguments and bad claims made by Creationism that involve unsupported extrapolation in this manner. It’s a great deal like looking at how the temperature has risen by 20 degrees between 6am and noon—and then extrapolating that the entire universe must have been frozen solid a few days ago and that we’re all therefore going to die in a fire within a few days ourselves. Without either direct observation of the temperatures from midnight to 6am; or at least evidence to permit us to extrapolate those temperatures making claims that temperatures will continue to rise or had in fact risen from absolute-zero would be laughed at.

These claims and arguments are, of course, not being published in any peer reviewed journals on the very subjects of geology, astrophysics, or physics because they’re blatantly wrong and wouldn’t even make it past the editorial phase. Instead, they are being spread instead in the political sphere; taking a the low road of attempting to convince a credulous and unstudied population to make them “true.” They can’t make it with these claims in places where people will actually put them to the test.

When people resort to cheating and misrepresentation to make their point, it’s time to either take them to task or dismiss them.

The Murder of Rosa Luxemborg

Freedom only for the supporters of the government, only for the members of a party – however numerous they may be – is no freedom at all. Freedom is always the freedom of the dissenter. Not because of the fanaticism of "justice", but rather because all that is instructive, wholesome, and purifying in political freedom depends on this essential characteristic, and its effects cease to work when "freedom" becomes a privilege.

- Rosa Luxemburg

Class struggle: external peace, international solidarity, peace among peoples. This is the sacred slogan of international socialist democracy that liberates nations.

- Karl Liebknecht

90 years ago today, Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht were murdered by the German Freikorps in employ of their political opponents.

Although the two were Marxists fighting for the rights of the proletariat, and for their own political ideals which most of you probably don’t share, summary executions of people with different beliefs is the worst kind of intolerance and it is severely detrimental to society as a whole.

My favorite band, McDermott’s 2 Hours, has a song about Rosa. It’s more of a sad and slow song than many of their others, but it is a good song with powerful lyrics commemorating a brave woman we can all learn something from, whether or not we agree with her politics.

Rosa

Rosa dry your eyes, you’ll never lie where failure lies
Rosa, your love defies, the fight isn’t over

Did you see her working with the peasant in the field
Wiping the sweat from his brow
Charging at the bosses with a sickle and a shield
Crying, the fight is now?

Rosa dry your eyes, you’ll never lie where failure lies
Rosa, your love defies, the fight isn’t over

And did you hear her singing on the factory floor
Through the grind and the mill and the pain
Bringing out the women and the children of the poor

Crying, we’ll rise again?

Rosa dry your eyes, you’ll never lie where failure lies

Rosa, your love defies, the fight isn’t over

Wherever the poor and the powerless decline
There she will lie like a balm
She’ll put them on their feet and set them into line
Crying now shoulder arms

Rosa dry your eyes, you’ll never lie where failure lies
Rosa, your love defies, the fight isn’t over

The last time I saw her she was on the picket line
Wiping the blood from her hair
Pushing back the law and fighting for the mine
Crying, we’ll not despair

Rosa dry your eyes, you’ll never lie where failure lies
Rosa, your love defies, the fight isn’t over

Instruction Manual For Life

Do you have the right manual?

Hopefully this video will remind us all to be kinder and more understanding when dealing with people who have different beliefs.

Whether we realize it or not, every one of us can learn something from every other person if we can be reasonable and open to new ideas. Even if we never agree on religion or other issues, we can still be friends.

Shunning people who don’t share our beliefs can hurt us even more than it hurts them.

“Expelled” Movie Review

I want to start off by saying that I really like Ben Stein and his work in the entertainment industry. I’ve always seen him as smart and fair-minded, even when our political views diverge. I respect a lot of his actions and opinions on a lot of things. However, I feel that his loyalties and allegiances cloud his rational judgment, especially when issues like genocide and abortion arise. This is obviously a painful subject for him, but I feel that this movie, like some other of his opinions, are ruled by emotion and not evidence. I still like him, even if I disagree with his stance on evolution. He’s as human and imperfect as anyone. We should understand his bias and try to glean some kind of understanding from his opinions.

Before watching “Expelled” I did encounter some hype for this movie, and due to my respect for Ben Stein I wanted to give it a fair review. I was keenly interested in the existence of intolerance and persecution from the know-it alls in charge – mainstream getting it wrong. This movie has been portrayed as being something to that effect, putting Stein et al. in the same vein as Alfred Wegener and his then-ridiculed hypothesis of continental drift, later to form the core of plate tectonics. Unfortunately, “Expelled” is nothing of the sort. It is a highly biased piece of propaganda that does nothing more than (try) to plant a seed of doubt with very little science to substantiate it. Apparently the seed is all that is needed and these ideas have taken root in the minds of many who are now thoroughly convinced that evil science has it all wrong.

You\'re like part of the family, Doctor!

In short, the movie “Expelled” fits the meaning of propaganda perfectly.

propaganda – [prop-uh-gan-duh]

  • information, ideas, or rumors deliberately spread widely to help or harm a person, group, movement, institution, nation, etc.
  • the deliberate spreading of such information, rumors, etc.
  • the particular doctrines or principles propagated by an organization or movement.

Propaganda can either be true or false; the intent is to spread information. In this case, the documentary wants to tell you how true believers of intelligent design have been unfairly maligned and vilified for expressing alternative views within the hallows of schools and scientific institutions. It does this. It does not, however, tell you why intelligent design is a viable theory. It proposes 1) that people are being unfairly treated (with no evidence) and 2) not believing in god makes you just like Hitler (again with no evidence).

Right away we are exposed to Godwin’s law as secularist scientists are compared to Nazi Germany and concludes with “Darwinian atheism” being the inspiration for Hitler’s cruel acts. One minute in, and Stein loses.

The entire film plays out as a David and Goliath story. Science is the giant, arrogant and cruel, who tries to exterminate the Davids within. By their telling, Big Science suppresses ID in a ruthless, systematic way and advises everyone to keep quiet about their beliefs. Branded intellectual terrorists, these “free thinkers” can martyr themselves or stay silent. These revolutionists must throw out the tainted Darwinist tea in justified, righteous protest of scientific imperialism.

By this time, I understand their point: thinking people, scientists themselves, are being pushed around because they harbor an unpopular theory. I should point out, though, that this isn’t actually the case either – much of what they claim is blatantly false. Now as I watch more of the same, halfway into the documentary, I’m expecting them to blow me away with the enormous mountain of evidence back up the theory of intelligent design. Apparently, this would have to wait as we hear how evolutionary theory is simply “a mess” because nobody has pinpointed the moment nor mechanism of the creation of life, much less the universe. Oh, foolish science. You can do nothing that religion can’t best.

But this isn’t about religion, they are quick to point out. Intelligent Design is NOT about religion. It is about rational, evidence-based science and free thought. But first, more Nazi imagery, and the movie continues to degrade into a slurry of mixed ideologies and propaganda.

What we find, shockingly, is that science is covering up for a greater conspiracy: hippies. With their free love and protests!

Panspermia? Ridiculous. Big Bang? Preposterous. But now THIS theory of a Creator that preexisted and created life on earth is science. Of course, whether or not you want to call that Creator “God” is a religious debate that clearly has no place in science. But since we are on the subject of religion, let’s look what can happen if you don’t believe in god, demonstrated with a simple equation:

Evolution = no meaning in life + no hope + no ethics = Hitler

Evolution leads to atheism, and atheism leads to depression so in the words of Barney Fife, we gotta nip it in the bud. We’ll neglect to mention anything about how religion has inspired evil acts. And let’s throw in the evils of abortion because Ben Stein hates abortion even more than atheism.

Nip it in the bud!

Again and again they maintain that the theory of evolution is falling apart. At no time do they present any evidence to the failings of evolutionary theory, except to say that it seems unlikely. Their only concern is to tell the world how unfairly these people have been treated because of their deeply-held (religious) convictions. Much like the poor UFO believers who are scorned and ridiculed.

Most of the interviews were cherry picked for the best presentation for ID (that’s why nothing is really said about ID and concentrates on the politicking) and the worst from skeptics and atheists. The interview with Richard Dawkins was really bad. I don’t know if he just cracked under presssure, or if they used “tricksy editing” or both. Either way, Dawkins needs to up his game. He’s more of a presenter than a debater, while Stein’s been at the showbiz thing for a long time and is used to being in front of a camera. Stein comes off as “Why you gotta be such a downer and ruin it for the rest of us?” – as if this is the goal of Dawkin’s work.

“Expelled” doesn’t give you any real information and it unfairly presents these non-issues as if they were real threats to education. It attacks science for being science – the quest to find answers. It’s not a failure or a weakness in science to say that you don’t know all the answers. What is wrong is to start out with a premise and to seek to find “facts” that support this foregone conclusion. Scientists don’t start the day saying “How can I dispute a divine creator today? What evidence can I distort to prove my atheist agenda?” It’s fine if they see god or a supreme being in their work – they are entitled to their beliefs. But these beliefs shouldn’t guide their hands.

The facts are, “Expelled” doesn’t offer a shred of evidence to support ID. So why should it be treated as a plausible alternative to evolutionary theory? Because Ben Stein saw an area to exploit in a documentary that pushes his personal agenda. Maybe next time he’ll push for astrology, numerology and alchemy to get their fair share in the classroom.

Time to Permanently Pop Popoff

Twenty years ago, magician and skeptic James Randi exposed the vile and disgusting fraud Peter Popoff for the scams he ran on some of the most vulnerable Christians. Sadly, most people already seem to have forgotten about the incident or they never knew about it, so he is back and successfully bilking believers of millions through their televisions.

I hope that Christians and non-Christians alike will help to spread the word about the scams he’s run in the past, and the scams he’s running today so that we can minimize the number of people he manages to hurt this time around.

If enough people hear the truth about him then he will probably fall into disrepute and bankruptcy once more, and maybe this time when his bubble bursts he won’t manage to come back to prey on the hopes of the desperate believers anymore.
