Mill Avenue Resistance: Friday, November 28th 2008

The Mill Avenue Resistance reports are written by Kyt Dotson as an extension of anthropological research on the population of Mill Avenue in Tempe, Arizona. Since the SFTS does their protests Friday and Saturday there are two reports a week. The supporting material not related to the Resistance reports can be found on the Under the Hills blog for Friday, November 28th 2008.

Nothing to report.

As for the acts of the Resistance tonight, the SFTS gathered and marched from the meeting of the SFTS on ASU common ground to Mill and discovered absolutely no opposition. The lone, littered giant thousand-dollar bill, but nothing of any substance for them to converse with appeared.

They eventually went to eat and cajole after patrolling the Ave. The football game must have lured away the usual visitors. There were several suggestions to go check the entrance to Sundevil Stadium, because as with most marketing it is best to go to where the people are, therefore if any evangelicals did happen to come out they would be there–but none revealed themselves.

The group eventually petered out and went their own merry ways; after spotted conversations with passersby the residuals finally melted into the night.

Last Saturday’s event was the most lively we’ve seen in a while, due in large part to the great turnout we had on our side (including our new friend Lizard Man and his band), and in even larger part to the comical antics of our belligerent preacher friend Jeremiah.

Seeming even more agitated than usual, Jeremiah continually moved his soap box and speaker around the corner in a vain attempt to avoid us between bursts of frustrated and angry preaching. I guess he’s lucky he had us though, because Al (the other preacher with a mic that night) couldn’t seem to get people to listen to him at all where he was.

Fortunately for us there were relatively few preachers out that night, so we did a good job of overwhelming them. Unfortunately there are still many nights where they outnumber us and flood all of Mill in a sea of fundamentalist Christian propaganda pamphlets while we are largely confined to one area.

This is where you can help the most.

If you are interested in helping us hand out our tracts or talking to people about our side, either through the mic or individually, contact us or just show up on Mill and find us. We can’t have too many people, and the more people we have, the more fun we have.

We have been considering a foray into First Fridays territory in downtown Phoenix as well, and after hearing the latest reconnaissance from this month’s event, we intend to be there for the next one on December 5th. More information will be posted prior to the event, so hopefully we’ll see some new people there as well. If you live in Phoenix and don’t get down to Mill often, this may be the event for you.
